The most forgiving perennial there is — arching strappy foliage and big lily-shaped flowers in yellow, orange, red, pink and near-purple. Each bloom lasts a day, but a clump throws dozens of buds; rebloomers like 'Stella de Oro' and 'Happy Returns' flower on and off from May to fall.
Full sun gives the most flowers, though they take light afternoon shade (pale colors actually hold better with some shade). Any soil. Space 18–24 in apart.
Almost any time; fall and spring are easiest. Hole twice the pot width, crown right at soil level — never buried — native soil with compost, Root Stimulator, mulch.
Weekly during bud set and bloom; quite drought tolerant otherwise.
A spring feeding when growth starts, and again after the first bloom flush on reblooming types.
Snap off spent blooms and cut the flower stalk at the base when it's finished. Remove brown foliage as it dies back in winter. Divide crowded clumps every three to four years in fall — that's also how you multiply them for free.
Daylily rust (orange powder on leaf undersides) in humid spells — remove affected foliage. Slugs on new spring growth. Deer love them, which is the one real drawback here.
Mass along a drive or fence, edge a bed, or mix with black-eyed Susan, salvia and liriope.
