Salvia 'Mystic Spires Blue'
Nursery Pro tip: Blue spikes from April to frost. Bees and butterflies never leave.
Deep blue-violet flower spikes from spring until frost on a tidy 2–3 ft plant — a compact, longer-blooming version of 'Indigo Spires' that doesn't flop. Bees and hummingbirds work it constantly, and the blue is hard to get any other way in July.
Full sun to a little afternoon shade; any drained soil. Space 2 ft apart. Excellent in big containers.
Spring through early fall. Hole twice the pot width, ball at grade, native soil with compost, Root Stimulator, mulch.
Weekly the first summer and in the heat after; more in pots. It tolerates drought but blooms better with steady moisture.
A spring feeding and a midsummer bloom fertilizer.
Shear off the spent spikes every few weeks for a fresh flush. Cut to the ground after the first hard freeze, or leave the stems for winter cover and cut in February.
It's root-hardy here but can be knocked back by a hard winter — mulch the crown. Aphids occasionally; spider mites in drought.
Blue against gold — plant with Sunshine ligustrum, lantana, black-eyed Susan and coneflower. A dependable filler between roses.
