Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm'
Nursery Pro tip: Cheerful, tough, and the goldfinches eat the seed heads all winter.
Golden daisies with dark centers, blooming June through September on a 2–3 ft clump that comes back bigger every year. 'Goldsturm' is the standard. Cut flowers by the armload and seed heads the finches work over in fall.
Full sun to light afternoon shade; any decent soil with drainage. Space 18–24 in apart.
Spring or fall. Hole twice the pot width, ball at grade, native soil with compost, Root Stimulator, mulch.
Weekly the first summer, then every week or two. Fairly drought tolerant once the clump is established.
A light spring feeding; too much makes it flop.
Deadhead through summer for more bloom, then leave the last seed heads standing for the birds and winter interest. Cut to the ground in late February. Divide the clump every three or four years.
Powdery mildew and leaf spot late in the season, especially crowded or overhead-watered — give it air and water at the base. It reseeds mildly, which most people welcome.
