Yucca filamentosa / Y. recurvifolia
Nursery Pro tip: Bulletproof structure in a hot bed. 'Color Guard' glows gold; soft-leaf yucca is the one without the needle tips near a walkway.
Architecture in a plant — stiff blue-green or yellow-striped sword leaves in a rosette, topped in early summer by a tall spike of creamy bell flowers. 'Color Guard' and 'Bright Edge' are variegated; soft-leaf types like Y. recurvifolia won't stab you.
Full sun and sharp drainage. Hot, dry, rocky, reflected heat, no irrigation — perfect. It will rot in a well-watered bed. Space 3 ft apart.
Spring or fall. Plant high, ball 2 inches above grade, native soil with expanded shale, gravel or thin mulch, Root Stimulator. Keep mulch off the crown.
Weekly until rooted, then essentially never. A monthly soak in extreme drought at most.

Cut the flower stalk off at the base after bloom. Remove dead lower leaves to keep it tidy. Offsets (pups) around the base can be dug and moved in spring.
Crown rot from overwatering. Sharp leaf tips on the spiny types — the ends can be trimmed with scissors if it's near a walk. Digging one out completely is a chore; any root left behind resprouts.
Xeriscape and modern plantings with agave, Texas sage, blackfoot daisy, Gulf muhly and gravel mulch. A single specimen in a big pot is a statement.
