A fast native evergreen vine that covers a fence or wall in orange-red trumpets in early spring, with scattered bloom afterward — and hummingbirds arriving in North Texas find it right when they need it. 'Tangerine Beauty' is the one to ask for. 20–30 ft.
Full sun to part shade, any soil. It climbs with tendrils and little adhesive discs, so it will go up brick, wood or wire without help. Give it room; it's vigorous.
Spring or fall. Hole twice the pot width, ball at grade, native soil, Root Stimulator, mulch.
Weekly the first summer, then very little.
None needed.
Right after the spring bloom. Cut it back hard whenever it outgrows the space — it takes severe pruning and regrows quickly. Keep it off the roofline and out of gutters.
Its vigor is the main issue; it will cover a fence and keep going. Foliage turns purplish in a cold winter — normal. Essentially pest-free.
Chain-link and wood fences, pergolas and arbors. With coral honeysuckle for a long hummingbird season.
